- Buying activity remains largely requirement-driven
- Ageing inventory continues to be liquidated selectively
India’s HR plate market firmed during the week ended 12 August, supported by a strong domestic HRC market and recent mill price adjustments. However, the increase remained limited as demand from the automobile, fabrication and heavy engineering sectors continued to remain at modest levels, with buyers largely restricting procurement to immediate requirements.

BigMint’s assessment for HR plate (IS 2062, Gr E250 BR, 20-40 mm) increased w-o-w by INR 600/t ($6/t) to INR 61,200/t ($641/t) from INR 60,600/t ($636/t) ex-Mumbai, while prices in Delhi remained broadly stable. Market participants reported that downstream demand remained largely unchanged, with no significant improvement in order flows or fresh enquiries during the assessment period.
Demand remains modest, buyers cautious
Demand from OEMs, fabrication units and heavy engineering companies remained broadly unchanged during the week, while trade-level buying continued at subdued levels. Procurement remained requirement-based, with buyers showing limited inclination to build inventories amid uncertain downstream consumption and recent price volatility.
A market participant said, “The market remains subdued, with no clear positive or negative factors influencing buying decisions, while procurement continues below usual levels,” reflecting cautious approach among buyers. Some ageing material is also being liquidated, while distributor inventories remain relatively lean and replenishment remains focused on immediate requirements.
HRC provides support to HR plate prices
HR plate prices continued to draw support from the broader HRC market, with BigMint’s HRC benchmark increasing by INR 100/t ($1/t) w-o-w to INR 58,000/t($608/t) ex-Mumbai as of 11 August. Firm HRC prices provided a supportive base for HR plate offers, allowing producers and traders to maintain higher price levels despite limited improvement in downstream demand.
From a market perspective, firm HRC prices and manageable supply conditions are providing underlying support to HR plate prices, while subdued downstream order flows continue to limit the pace of further gains. Buyers, meanwhile, are continuing to assess price stability before increasing procurement.
Supply remains manageable
Supply availability remains broadly manageable, with industry sources indicating that hot-strip mills (HSMs) are operating at full production capacity. Distributor inventories remain relatively lean, while pockets of tightness have been reported in selected markets but have not materially affected overall availability.
Outlook
HR plate prices are expected to remain stable to marginally firm in the near term, supported by firm HRC prices and mill pricing discipline. However, subdued downstream consumption and cautious procurement are likely to limit further upside. Market activity is expected to remain largely requirement-driven, with a sustained improvement in downstream orders needed to generate stronger price momentum.
