- Auction results indicate strong buyer interest at lower prices
- Higher spot prices in West Bengal contribute to stronger BSL offtake
SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) offered around 14,000 tonnes (t) of pig iron in its latest auction on 12 August 2026, with the entire quantity booked through four rakes at the opening price of INR 35,530/t ex-works plant. The auction price was around INR 1,000/t lower than the previous level of INR 36,500/t in the 15 july 2026 auction, indicating some softening in the market. However, the complete booking of the offered quantity highlights stronger buying interest at lower prices.
In the previous auction, only around 50% of the offered material was booked at INR 36,500/t, compared with 100% booking in the latest auction. The sharp improvement in participation suggests that buyers remain cautious at higher price levels but are willing to procure material when offers become competitive. The auction therefore points to price-sensitive buying rather than a broad-based improvement in demand.
Pig iron availability in the eastern region remains relatively limited, encouraging buyers to secure material at competitive levels. Buyers, particularly from the Bengal region, are showing stronger interest in BSL material, as prevailing pig iron prices in Bengal remain around INR 38,300-38,500/t. The significant differential between the BSL auction price and prevailing regional prices has kept the material attractive to buyers.
The latest auction outcome suggests that lower price levels continue to attract buying despite cautious market sentiment. In the near term, limited eastern availability could provide some support to pig iron prices, while subdued downstream demand is likely to keep procurement selective and price-sensitive.
