India: RINL Vizag to re-offer Goonyella, Brooks Run coking coal in Aug’26

  • Jul’26 auction received no bids, reflecting weak buying interest
  • Fresh auctions announced to test buyers’ price expectations, demand

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), Vizag, has scheduled fresh auctions for 150,000 t of imported coking coal, for which an auction had been held on 25 July 2026 and which reportedly received no bids. The company has issued a notice for 75,000 t of Brooks Run soft coking coal, divided into three 25,000-t lots, with the auction scheduled for 13 August 2026.

Additionally, a separate auction has been scheduled for 75,000 t of Goonyella hard coking coal, also divided into three 25,000-t lots, on 14 August 2026. The renewed offerings suggest that RINL is seeking to clear the imported coal inventory through successive auctions following the weak response in July.

Fresh auctions announced to test buyers’ price expectations, demand

Reportedly, no bids were in RINL’s e-auction for 150,000 t of imported coking coal held on 25 July 2026, reflecting subdued buying interest among domestic steel mills and traders. The auction comprised 75,000 t each of premium washed Goonyella hard coking coal and Brooks Run high-volatile coking coal. While some mills and traders were reportedly interested in the Goonyella lot, particularly given its higher quality, no bids were ultimately submitted.

The weak response comes despite RINL offering the material through an online forward auction, with the coal available from the AGPL stackyard at Visakhapatnam. The auction mechanism requires bidders to quote competitively, while the material is offered on an “as is where is and no complaint” basis.

The outcome of the August auctions will be closely watched for indications of buyers’ price expectations and their willingness to absorb imported coking coal amid prevailing domestic steel and raw-material market conditions.
