India: MCL, NCL line up coal for August auctions

  • MCL offers large volumes across G12-G14 grades
  • NCL focuses on G8, G9, G10 and G13

Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. (MCL) and Northern Coalfields Ltd. (NCL) have scheduled separate e-auctions in August, offering a combined 3.66 million tonnes (mnt) of coal. MCL’s Single Window Mode Agnostic e-auction, scheduled for 11 August, offers 3.4017 mnt, while NCL’s CIL e-auction on 13 August offers 258,000 t. MCL’s auction includes a broad mix of G7-G14 coal and washery rejects, whereas NCL’s offering is concentrated in G8, G9, G10 and G13 grades. MCL’s notice was issued on 4 August, while NCL issued its notice on 6 August.

MCL offers 3.4 mnt in first August auction

MCL has offered 3.4017 mnt through its first Single Window Mode Agnostic auction of August. The offering is dominated by G14 and G13 coal, which together account for around 2.77 mnt, or more than 80% of the total offering.

G14 is the largest grade, with 2.141 mnt offered across Garjanbahal, HBM, Integrated LBL, Samleswari and Hingula. G13 follows with 633,000 t, mainly from Kulda, Lajkura and Orient. G12 accounts for 302,000 t, while G11 has 104,000 t. Smaller quantities include G7, G8 and G10 coal.

MCL is also offering 200,000 t of washery rejects from IB Valley Coal Washery, with GCV of 1,500-1,899 kcal/kg. The notice specifies a notified/modulated price of INR 507/t for the rejects.

G12 and G13 feature prominently

MCL’s G12 offering totals 302,000 t, comprising 104,000 t each from Bhubaneswari and Ananta, 40,000 t from Kaniha and 54,000 t from Lingaraj. The representative notified price is INR 1,101/t.

G13 is offered from Orient, Kulda and Lajkura. Kulda and Lajkura each have 304,000 t on offer, while Orient has 25,000 t. The representative notified price for G13 is INR 1,016/t.

NCL offers 258,000 t across five grades

NCL’s 13 August auction is considerably smaller, with 258,000 t offered through road and rail modes. The offering comprises G9 from Kakri OC, G13 from Jhingurda OC, G10 from Block B, and G8 from Dudhhichua OC and Khadia OC. The auction notice identifies the representative grades, quantities and floor prices for each source.

Different auction profiles for August

The two auctions show different supply strategies. MCL has placed a substantial volume of mid- and lower-grade coal into the market, led by G14 and G13, alongside washery rejects. NCL, in contrast, has a more concentrated offering, with G13 accounting for nearly half of its total quantity and G8 forming another significant portion.

The large MCL offering could provide buyers with wider sourcing options across grades and mines, while NCL’s smaller catalogue may attract stronger attention towards its higher-grade G8 and G9 coal. Both auctions will therefore provide useful indications of industrial buyers’ appetite for domestic coal during the monsoon period.
