Capesize rally pushes Baltic Dry Index to two-week high

  • Panamax extends gains; Supramax remains flat
  • Firm iron ore export demand lifts Capesize earnings

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) climbed 4.06% (111 points) to 2,843 on 3 August from 2,732 on 31 July, marking its highest level since 15 July. The rally was primarily driven by robust Capesize earnings, supported by firm iron ore export demand from Australia and Brazil, while steady coal and grain cargo enquiries continued to underpin the Panamax segment. The Supramax market remained largely unchanged as persistent weakness in minor bulk cargo demand offset broader market strength.

Segment-wise performance

  • Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): Surged 6.24% (268 points) to 4,564 on 3 August from 4,296 on 31 July, supported by strong iron ore shipments from Australia and Brazil, healthy miner-led cargo volumes, and improved chartering activity.
  • Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): Increased 2.30% (48 points) to 2,135 on 3 August from 2,087 on 31 July, aided by steady grain and coal cargo demand, particularly in the Atlantic basin, along with improved vessel utilisation.
  • Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): Edged up 0.06% (1 point) to 1,610 on 3 August from 1,609 on 31 July, as subdued minor bulk demand and ample vessel availability continued to limit rate improvements.

Outlook

The BDI is expected to remain firm in the near term, supported by healthy iron ore export programmes from Australia and Brazil and stable coal and grain trade supporting the Panamax segment. However, continued weakness in the minor bulk market and abundant Supramax tonnage may restrict broader freight market upside.
