India: Cumin market remains firm w-o-w as lower arrivals offset weak export demand

  • Export demand slows due to competition from China, Turkiye, Syria
  • Restrained farmer selling limits supply, reduces scope for steep correction

India’s cumin market remained resilient during the week ended 3 August 2026, with tightening domestic supplies preventing any major correction despite continued weakness in export demand. The benchmark spot price increased by INR 77/quintal w-o-w to INR 20,832/quintal. On NCDEX, the August futures contract eased marginally to INR 20,925/quintal from INR 20,980/quintal, while the September contract strengthened to INR 21,290/quintal from INR 21,245/quintal, indicating that traders are gradually shifting their focus to deferred contracts amid expectations of firmer fundamentals ahead.

Lower arrivals provide support despite export headwinds

Export demand continues to remain under pressure due to aggressive competition from China, Turkiye, and Syria, limiting any sharp upside in domestic prices. However, declining arrivals and restrained farmer selling have kept market supplies in check, significantly reducing the probability of a steep correction. Export-quality cumin continues to command a premium, with 99% quality FOB Mundra quoted at $2,300/t for Europe and $2,200/t for Singapore, highlighting that premium-grade demand remains relatively stable despite softer global buying.

Rollover activity reflects improving market confidence

Open interest in the August contract declined 17.3% w-o-w to 7,704 lots from 9,318 lots, reflecting position unwinding ahead of expiry. In contrast, September open interest almost doubled to 3,081 lots from 1,557 lots, signalling fresh buying interest and rollover into the next active contract. Physical arrivals declined 6.8% to 7,102 tonnes (t) from 7,621 t, tightening immediate supplies, while exchange-accredited stocks rose only marginally to 6,029 t from 5,975 t, indicating that inventory additions remain limited.

Outlook

Market sentiment has turned cautiously constructive as downside risks appear limited while supply fundamentals gradually tighten. Trade participants expect INR 20,900-21,000/quintal to remain a strong support zone. A sustained move above INR 21,500-21,700/quintal could attract fresh speculative buying and pave the way for the next leg of the rally. Until export demand improves, the market is likely to consolidate within the current range, but lower arrivals, limited selling pressure and growing participation in deferred futures suggest the broader bias remains positive.
