India: Infrastructure projects face INR 4.92 lakh crore cost overrun in Jun’26

India’s infrastructure sector recorded a cumulative INR 4.92 lakh crore cost overrun across ongoing projects as of June 2026, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The overruns were mainly attributed to delays in land acquisition, regulatory approvals, funding constraints and rising input costs. Escalating project costs may increase financing requirements, extend project timelines and put additional pressure on infrastructure execution.
