Taiwan: Feng Hsin leaves rebar, scrap prices unchanged amid weak market sentiment

  • Taiwan’s rebar sales cool down after short-lived rebound
  • US-origin HMS prices stabilise after prolonged decline

Taiwan’s largest rebar producer, Feng Hsin Steel, headquartered in Taichung in central Taiwan, has decided to roll over its rebar list price and buying price of local scrap for transactions over 27-31 July, according to a company official.

For business discussions through this Friday, Feng Hsin continues to offer its 13mm-diameter rebar at TWD 17,800/tonne (t) ($549/t) EXW, while the mini-mill’s buying price for local HMS 80:20 scrap stays unchanged on week at TWD 9,200/t ($284/t), the official confirmed.

Feng Hsin’s decision is in line with market expectations, as Taiwan’s rebar sales have cooled down after a short-lived rebound, and inquiries from steel end-users have also declined, prompting local mini-mills to hold their list prices to monitor further market signals, Mysteel Global learnt.

Besides, prices of global scrap delivered to Taiwan have yet to recover, suggesting limited support for further growth in local rebar prices.

As of 27 July, the US-origin HMS 80:20 scrap price was reported at $330/t CFR Taiwan, stable after the persistent decline over the prior eight weeks, while the price of Japan-origin H2 scrap came in at $355/t CFR Taiwan, still down by $5/t from two weeks earlier, according to a market source in Taiwan. No quotation for Japanese H2 scrap had been available during the previous week, as reported.

In parallel, rebar prices in the Chinese mainland have lost ground recently as widespread heatwaves and heavy rainfall in most regions of the country continue to constrain downstream demand. This also aggravated the wait-and-watch sentiment in Taiwan’s steel market.

On 27 July, China’s national price of HRB400E 20-mm rebar was assessed by Mysteel at RMB 3,271/t ($483/t) including 13% VAT, slipping by RMB 15/t ($2/t) on week and marking the lowest since 24 November 2025.
