Beijing will shut-down the remaining four coal mines by 2020, and exit coal mining completely, Chinese media reported recently. The move is aimed at curbing the growing levels of air pollution in the world’s largest coal consuming country.
Marching towards the goal of completely exiting coal mining, two mines with a cumulative production capacity of 1.8 MnT have already been closed down in 2016.
Air pollution levels normally go up during winters, when numerous coal fired power plants operate as demand for power escalates.
But, India has targeted raising coal production to 1 BnT by FY20. And, China could be an export market for India.
Coal mining have existed in China for nearly 800 years.
