The New Energy Policy to Push Coal Demand in India

The National Energy Policy (NEP) of the Government of India (GoI) is expected to trigger substantial coal demand in the country as power generation will rise further due to the GoI’s mandate for attaining universal electrification involving round the clock electricity by 2022.

The NEP is expected to impart a profound impetus to consumption of the growing coal production in the country. The Coal Ministry has set an ambitious target of attaining an ambitious production of 1 billion ton of coal by FY20.

The Coal Ministry is stressing upon streamlining coal production in the country by expediting faster environmental and forest clearances, pursuing with the state governments for land acquisition and co-coordinating with railways for uninterrupted coal movement.
