India: Vedanta’s iron ore output up 5% but sales drop 19% y-o-y in FY’26

  • Iron ore production in FY’26 reaches 6.5 mnt
  • Iron ore sales in FY’26 at 4.4 mnt, sharp fall in Karnataka

Vedanta Ltd has announced its operational performance for the financial year 2026 (FY’26). Key highlights are as follows:

Iron ore output up 5% y-o-y:

Iron ore production was recorded at 6.5 million tonnes (mnt) in FY’26, marking a 5% rise compared to 6.2 mnt in FY’25. Karnataka mines contributed the bulk of the output, accounting for 5 mnt with a 5% fall y-o-y against 5.3 mnt in the last FY. The rest 1.5 mnt was from Goa. Goa iron ore production witnessed a surge of 62% compared to 0.9 mnt in FY’25.

Production rose by 26% q-o-q in Q4 to 2 mnt, compared to 1.6 mnt in the previous quarter. Saleable ore output increased on the back of improved operational efficiencies and the ramp-up of mining operations in Iron Ore Goa.

Iron ore sales down 19% y-o-y:

Sales volumes in FY’26 stood at 4.4 mnt, a 19% decline from 5.4 mnt in FY’25. Around 2.9 mnt was sold from Karnataka (against 4.8 mnt in the last FY) and 1.5 mnt from Goa (0.6 mnt in the last FY). On a q-o-q basis, sales remained largely stable at 1.3 mnt in Q4FY’26.

Sources indicated that sales in Karnataka declined due to the depletion of existing grade, leaving mostly lower-grade material in the mine stockyards. The company is now planning to sell this inventory during the current financial year.

Iron ore production and sales performance have been boosted by operations in Goa. The company is further ramping up production in Goa, supported by favorable realisations from export shipments. They are discussing some domestic deals with local steel manufacturer of west coast.

Pig iron production increases 10% y-o-y

The company’s pig iron production increased to 895,000 t in FY’26, rising by 10% y-o-y compared to 817,000 t in FY’25, primarily driven by production enhancement initiatives completed during the year.

On a q-o-q note, production inched down by 6%, from 215,000 t in Q4FY’26 to 229,000 t in the last quarter.
