Russia recorded a drop in its monthly coal exports by 2% in Sep’16. While yearly exports also noted a marginal decline during the month.
Russia, one of the largest coal exporters in the globe, shipped about 16.9 MnT coal to different destinations in Sep’16. The country’s exports has fallen by 2% on monthly basis. While, yearly imports drop by 1% which was at 17 MnT in Sep’15. As per to Russian customs data.
Grade-wise coal export in Sep’16
Out of the total exported quantity, more than 70% Bituminous coal shipped by the country every month and rest includes Coking, Anthracite, Coke and other grades.

Quantity in MnT
The country has been exporting more than 40% coal of its total yearly production. In 2015, the country had shipped about 155.6 MnT coal worldwide. Meanwhile, Russian coal output has been rising every year and reached at 373 MnT, which was at 358 MnT in 2014.
In first nine months (Jan’16-Sep’16) of 2016, country’s export has noted a growth of 9% to 125.7 MnT which was at 115.4 MnT in 2015 (Jan’15-Sep’15). Besides, the Russian government is also planning to increase its coal production quantity and exports by 10 MnT respectively.
Major Export Destinations
Countries like Korea, Japan, UK and Taiwan are the largest taker of Russian coal. Whilst, in the month of Sep’16 they were imported large quantity from the country.
Korea, largest importer of Russian coal, took about 2.7 MnT coal in Sep’16; Down by 8% compared to last month. While, yearly import rose by 32%, which was 2 MnT in Sep’15.
Japan, the second-largest coal importer during the month, imported about 1.9 MnT coal in Sep’16, with a fall of 13%, compared to 2.1 MnT in Aug’16. The nation’s yearly import also noted a downfall of 18%, which was 2.2 MnT in Sep’15.
UK, the third-largest importer of Russian coal in Sep’16, imported about 1.4 MnT coal during the month, recorded a significantly growth of 21% in shipments. Country’s import was 1.1 MnT in Aug’16. While recorded a downfall of 21% Y-o-Y.
