India’s total monthly coal imports up by 10% in Oct’16. However the mark had attained with its first rise in imports since Jun’16. Besides, monthly import recorded a downfall of 6% Y-o-Y.
Post experiencing a consecutive fall in coal imports since Jun’16, India witnessed its first climb in Oct’16. The 2nd largest dry fuel importer across the globe, has mark the highest coal imports in last 4 months and reached 17.8 MnT (pet coke included) in Oct’16. The imports had attained with a growth of 10% during the month compared to Sep’16. In addition, total yearly coal imports fallen by 6% from 18.9 MnT in Oct’15.
Persistently rising global coal demand, poor grade domestic coal and lack of material availability in the global market resulted into comparatively fast trade in India in Oct’16.
As per SteelMint’s data analysis, out of the total imports, the country imported 11.8 MnT non-coking coal, 4 MnT coking coal and about 0.7 MnT coke & anthracite in Oct’16. While, 1.3 MnT Pet coke (down by 16%) imported was majorly supplied by USA and Saudi Arabia.

Major exporting countries to India in Oct’16
Indonesia, the biggest conventional source of the country, supplied about 7.8 MnT of coal, registered a growth of 12% against Sep’16. Moreover, India purchases most of its coal from countries such as Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, USA, China and Saudi Arabia.
Major discharging ports and importers in Oct’16
Mundra, India’s biggest Port in dry fuel handling, received the highest volume of 2.5 MnT with a marginal growth of 1% in Oct’16. Other ports of the country namely Paradip, Krishnapatnam and Gangavaram received 1.9 MnT, 1.4 MnT and 1 MnT coal respectively.
Indian companies like Adani Power, SAIL, Adani Enterprises, CGPL, JSW Steel and Agarwal Coal imported large quantities of about 1.7 MnT, 1.2 MnT, 1 MnT, 0.8 MnT, 0.7 MnT and 0.6 MnT respectively in Oct’16.
