- JNPT announces relief measures for exporters
- Port authority expands storage and allows temporary transshipment
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) has issued a trade notice announcing relief measures for exporters affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that have led to export containers being stranded at port terminals.
In line with directives from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the port authority has introduced several steps to ease the operational and financial burden on the EXIM community.
As part of these relief measures:
- Terminal operators will grant a 100% waiver on ground rent/dwell time charges for up to 15 days (from 28 February to 14 March 2026) for export containers that were already lying inside terminals from 28 February or gated in until 7:00 AM on 8 March 2026.
- Additionally, 80% of reefer plug-in charges will be waived for up to 15 days for stranded refrigerated containers carrying perishable cargo under the same eligibility conditions.
To further support exporters, JNPA and terminal operators are allowing stranded containers to remain stored in terminal yards until shipment, while also coordinating with customs authorities to facilitate temporary transshipment storage of laden containers from other ports that are destined for the Middle East. The port has also allocated additional storage space to terminals to manage the increased cargo volumes.
Shipping lines, NVOCCs, and freight forwarders have been directed to ensure that the financial benefits of these waivers are passed on to the actual exporters, thereby helping mitigate the disruption caused by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
