South African monthly coal export up by 30% in Sep’16 compared with last month, also coal export recorded more than 27% growth on yearly basis.
South Africa, one of the largest thermal coal exporters in the globe shipped about 8 MnT of coal to the different destinations in Sep’16. The monthly coal export up by 30% compared to Aug’16 and also record a significant growth by 27.2% compared to Sep’15. While monthly coal export quantity hit the highest of the year.

Out of the total exported quantity, more than 90% Bituminous coal shipped by the country every month and rest includes Anthracite, coke and other grades.

South African Monthly Coal Export 2015 Vs 2016
In the first nine month of the year, the country has exported 55.2 MnT coal with a marginal fall of 3% which was at 56.9 MnT in the same consecutive period last year.
Country-wise Coal Export
India is one of the largest buyers of South African thermal coal as the country’s whole sponge industry is largely dependent on South African coal. Out of the total exports of the year the country had shipped about 60% of coal to India. India imported the largest coal quantity, followed by Swaziland and Pakistan as the 2nd and third largest importers in Sep’16.
India, largest consumer of South African grades took about 3.3 MnT coal in Sep’16, registered a significant growth of 43% compared to last month. While yearly imports have also rise by 52% which was at 2.2 MnT in Sep’15.
Swaziland, the second-largest coal importer during the month, imported around 0.78 MnT coal in Sep’16 with a remarkable growth which is more than 100%, compared to 0.01 MnT in Aug’16. The nation’s yearly imports recorded a notable growth which was 0.01 MnT in Sep’15.
Pakistan emerges as the third-largest importer of South African coal in Sep’16, imported around 0.43 MnT coal during the month, up by 69% in shipments as country’s imports was 0.26 MnT in Aug’16. While imports have also gone up by 96% on yearly basis, compared with Sep’15.
