Japan monthly coal imports recorded a downfall by 6% in Aug’16. Besides yearly imports has fell by 8% compared to Aug’15.
Japan, the world’s third largest coal importers, coal imports stood at 15.9 MnT in Aug’16. The country’s total imports has fallen by 6% on monthly basis. While yearly imports fell by 8% which was at 17.2 MnT in Aug’15.
In the month of Aug’16, out of the total import, the country imported 10.2 MnT Bituminous, 3.5 MnT coking and about 0.6 MnT coke & anthracite.

Quantity in MnT
Japan’s coal imports, including Bituminous, Coking, Anthracite, Coke, Pet coke and other grades. In the first 5 months of FY17 (Apr’16-Aug’16), the coal imports is down by 5% to 77.2 MnT, compared with the same period in FY16.
Major exporting countries in Aug’16
Australia was the largest supplier to Japan in Aug’16, shipped about 9 MnT coal with a remarkable decline by 15% compared with Jul’16 and also fallen by 14% on yearly basis.
Moreover Australia caters more than 60% share of the total coal imports of Japan. Also recorded as top supplied about 46.92 MnT coal over Apr’16-Aug’16.
Indonesia, the second-largest coal exporter to Japan, exported about 3 MnT coal in Aug’16 with a remarkable growth by 25% M-o-M. While yearly exports has noted a growth of 15% which was 2.6 MnT in Aug’15.
Russia, the third largest coal exporter to Japan, shipped around 1.5 MnT coal in during the month, down by 4% M-o-M and also declined by 14% Y-o-Y.
