  • China’s stainless steel output set to decline
  • 300-series production faces steepest monthly cuts

SteelDaily: China’s crude stainless steel production is set to decline in December. Preliminary output from 43 major mills stood at 3.46 million tonnes (mnt) in November, slipping 1.6% m-o-m but still rising 4.2% y-o-y.

Series-wise production

The 200 series registered 995,000 tonnes (t), down 5.6% m-o-m. The 300 series recorded 1,793,800 t, edging lower by 0.34%.

The 400 series was the only gainer, reaching 670,400 t – up 1.61% m-o-m and a strong 25.43% higher y-o-y.

December production expected to fall 5%

Total crude stainless production for December is estimated at 3.29 mnt, a 5% m-o-m decline and 4.6% lower y-o-y. The steepest cut is expected in the 300 series, projected at 1.71 mnt – down 4.4% m-o-m and 7.6% y-o-y. The 400 series is forecast at 613,000 t, marking the sharpest monthly drop at 8.6%, while 200-series output is likely to ease to 958,000 t, down 3.7% m-o-m.

Overall, the anticipated reduction reflects a proactive move by Chinese mills to manage weak demand and trim inventories ahead of the year-end.
