Ukraine: Ferrexpo suspends pellet output after missile strikes hit power grid

  • Russian attack disrupts electricity supply to Poltava operations
  • Ferrexpo already grappling with operational, liquidity pressures

Ferrexpo, Ukraine’s leading iron ore pellet producer and exporter, has temporarily suspended production and exports after Russian missile strikes on Ukraine’s power infrastructure disrupted electricity supply to its operations in the Poltava region.

The suspension comes at a time when Ferrexpo is already facing operational and liquidity pressures. In the third quarter of 2025, the company recorded pellet output of 638,963 t, down 22% from 821,882 t in Q2, as halted VAT refunds led to liquidity shortages, prompting the company to idle one pelletising line and boost concentrate output. Over 9MCY’25, pellet output dropped 39% y-o-y to 2.8 mnt.

Meanwhile, earlier, Ferrexpo produced 6.89 mnt of commercial output in 2024, including 6.07 mnt of pellets and 0.49 mnt of DR-grade material.

As per reports, missile strikes on 8 November damaged power lines in Horishni Plavni and nearby Kremenchuk, cutting electricity to its key sites — Ferrexpo Poltava Mining and Ferrexpo Yeristovo Mining. While no injuries were reported, operations remain disrupted. Exports via Black Sea ports continue but face rising risks amid repeated attacks on Ukraine’s energy network.

Ferrexpo posted that partial power restoration has allowed limited sections of the processing plant to resume activity, though operations and shipments remain constrained until full electricity supply is reinstated. The company said it had prepared for such disruptions by stockpiling intermediate and finished products at production and logistics locations to mitigate export delays.

Exports continue primarily through Black Sea ports, which remain operational but vulnerable to logistical disruptions. The latest power cuts highlight the ongoing energy and security risks confronting Ukraine’s mining and export sectors amid the continuing conflict.
