Glencore’s coking coal output rises in Q3CY’25 on strong contribution from Elk Valley

  • Elk Valley Resources (EVR) in Canada delivers 6.7 mnt
  • Coking coal production from Australia up 15%

Glencore’s coking coal output climbed sharply in the third quarter of 2025 (Q3 CY’25), touching 9 million tonnes (mnt), up 17% from the same period last year. Non coking coal output stood at 25.2 mnt, down 3% y-o-y.

Coking coal production strengthened by EVR integration

The rise was primarily supported by Elk Valley Resources (EVR) in Canada, which delivered 6.7 mnt in the quarter. The integration of EVR, acquired in July 2024, continued to bolster Glencore’s position in the premium metallurgical coal segment.

Year-to-date (YTD) coking coal production reached 24.7 mnt, a remarkable 123% y-o-y increase from 11.1 mnt in 2024.

Australian coking coal stable

Australian coking coal output totalled 2.3 mnt in Q3CY’25, marking a 15% y-o-y rise. On a year-to-date basis, Australian coking output stood at 5.3 mnt, broadly steady compared to 5.4 mnt in 2024.

Non coking coal production decreased slightly

Non coking coal output dropped slightly by 3% y-o-y during the quarter at 25.2 mnt, broadly in line with 25.9 mnt in Q3 CY’24. The YTD total reached 73.5 mnt, just 1% higher y-o-y.

Also, in Colombia’s Cerrejon mine, output reductions were part of Glencore’s voluntary production cut program announced in March 2025.

Australian thermal coal output improves

On YTD basis, Australian thermal and semi-soft coal production stood at 48.3 mnt, supported by stronger performance at Hunter Valley Operations. The improvement came after deferred stripping in the prior period. Although Glendell and Integra mines closed in 2024, these impacts were partially balanced by enhanced operational efficiencies across active assets.

South African and Colombian output trends

In South Africa, YTD thermal coal output stood at 12.3 mnt. Export volumes increased by 12% to 9.2 mnt, while domestic sales dropped by 18% to 3.1 mnt amid softer local demand.

Meanwhile, Colombia’s Cerrejon mine produced 4 mnt in Q3 CY’5, down 17% y-o-y. And the YTD output stood at 12.9 mnt, down 13% y-o-y.

Outlook

Glencore reaffirmed its full-year 2025 guidance, targeting 30-35 mnt of coking coal and 92-97 mnt of non coking coal. With EVR’s strong performance and steady Australian operations, the company remains well-positioned to deliver towards the upper range of its coal production outlook.
