- BALCO to contribute over 20% of India’s total aluminium production
- Latest expansion to boost Vedanta Aluminium’s capacity to 2.8 MTPA
Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a subsidiary of Vedanta Aluminium, has achieved a major milestone by producing the first metal from India’s largest 525 kilo Ampere (kA) aluminium smelter at its Korba plant in Chhattisgarh. This breakthrough marks a crucial step in BALCO’s one million tonne per annum (MTPA) expansion project, establishing a new benchmark in aluminium smelting technology.
The 525 kA smelter, which surpasses the previous Indian record of 378 kA, showcases advancements in scale, efficiency, and operational excellence. With the commissioning of the new 0.435 MTPA potline, BALCO’s total aluminium capacity will reach 1 MTPA, making it a part of the elite global ‘million tonne club’. The expansion reinforces the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative by boosting domestic production of high-quality aluminium for strategic sectors such as defence, aerospace, automotive, power, and construction.
Upon full ramp-up, BALCO will contribute over 20% of India’s aluminium output, strengthening the nation’s self-reliance and industrial growth. CEO Rajesh Kumar stated that this achievement not only enhances national capacity but also generates employment, supports allied industries, and drives regional economic development.
With this expansion, Vedanta Aluminium’s overall capacity will scale to 2.8 MTPA, positioning it among the world’s leading aluminium producers. The milestone was made possible through partnerships with global and domestic leaders such as L&T, ABB, Siemens, and GAMI, who contributed advanced engineering and automation expertise.
