India: Manganese ore import prices edge up w-o-w on global cues

  • Eramet raises Sep’25 ore prices, reduces export targets
  • Muted steel demand hits SiMn; ferro grades stay resilient

Imported manganese ore prices in India edged up w-o-w, supported by global supply-side factors. However, key manganese alloy prices softened, driven by subdued demand from the steel sector, reflecting cautious market sentiment and limited procurement activity.

  • Australian high-grade ore: Prices of Australian high-grade (46% Mn) ore rose slightly by $0.01/dry metric tonne unit (dmtu) to around $4.70/dmtu w-o-w.
  • Gabonese high-grade ore: Prices of Gabonese high-grade (44% Mn) inched up by $0.02/dmtu w-o-w to $4.40/dmtu.
  • South African lumps: Prices of South African lumps (37% Mn) rose $0.02/dmtu w-o-w to $4.16/dmtu.

Market overview

Eramet lifts Sep’25 offers, reduces export targets: Eramet Comilog has increased its September 2025 manganese ore offers to $4.27/dmtu CIF China for Mn44.5% lumps and $4.07/dmtu for Mn43%, both up by $0.07/dmtu m-o-m.

Meanwhile, despite steady first-half production at 3.5 million tonnes (mnt) from its Moanda mine in Gabon, logistical challenges, mainly in rail transport, led to reduced transported volumes of 3.0 mnt against 3.2 mnt in the corresponding period last year.

Citing these issues, the company revised its 2025 export guidance down by ~3% to 6.5-7.0 mnt, compared to the earlier 6.7-7.2 mnt range. The renovation of the Trans Gabonese railway remains critical to easing ongoing logistical constraints.

A key Indian importer informed BigMint that manganese ore prices may see a slight upward movement in the near term, supported by renewed Chinese inquiries. While this may help improve alloy market sentiment, a recovery in actual demand for alloys will be crucial for sustained price support.

Manganese alloys see mixed trends: Indian manganese alloys prices declined w-o-w, with silico manganese (60-14) falling by INR 650/t ($7/t) to INR 71,800-72,000/t ($823-826/t) in Durgapur, Raipur, and Vizag.

The drop was driven by excess supply and cautious buying from steel mills, which limited purchases to immediate requirements. Export prices of the 65-16 grade also slipped by $1/t w-o-w to $938/t FOB Vizag/Haldia.

In contrast, ferro manganese (HC 70%) prices remained largely stable, dipping only INR 150/t ($2/t) w-o-w to INR 70,950/t ($814/t) ex-Durgapur, while Raipur prices held firm at INR 71,100/t ($815/t). Prices were supported by balanced supply and stable demand, with limited trade activity. Meanwhile, HC 75% ferro manganese export prices were unchanged at $900/t FOB Vizag/Haldia.

Cargo arrivals in India up w-o-w: Manganese ore imports into India increased by 18% w-o-w over 9-15 July, with shipments totalling 139,370 t.
