China scales back coal imports in May’25 amid softer demand

As per data released by the General Administration of Customs, China, coal and lignite imports in May’25 stood at 36.04 mnt, registering a 4.7% decline compared to Apr. Cumulatively, total imports during the Jan-May’25 reached 188.67 mnt, reflecting an 8% y-o-y decrease. As per reports, low domestic coal prices undercut imports, with renewable energy shrinking demand for coal power.
