15 Years Old Vehicles have to be Scrapped – NGT Order

15 years old diesel vehicle can’t be sold in any part of the country, it has to be scrapped, NGT order clarifies.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday said all diesel vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi-NCR will have to be scrapped and won’t be given permission to be sold in other parts of the country.

Adding to its 19 Jul’16 order on phase-out of old diesel vehicles throughout the national capital region, the tribunal also directed transport authorities to issue no objection certificates to vehicles between 10 and 15 years old to enable their sale in designated places outside NCR.

“Diesel vehicles more than 15 years old shall be scrapped and no NOC issued for transfer of these vehicles,” the order said.

NGT has also directed central government to speed up vehicle recycling policy. It is to be noted that ministry of transport has submitted a draft policy on vehicle recycling in the month of May’16 and it waiting for finance ministry’s approval.

Once the policy gets in place, it will open new avenues for auto recycling in India. According to government there could be over 28 million vehicles that has completed their life cycle and is ready to be scrapped.

Auto recycling is a common practice in developed nations like US, Europe, Japan, Korea and China. Over 30 million cars are recycled every year, generating a scrap of over 25 million tonnes. On an average a passenger car can generate 900 kgs of Steel scrap, 100 kgs of Aluminum scrap and 20 kgs of Copper scrap

It is to be noted that Mahindra Inter Trade has formed a joint venture with MSTC, a government owned company, to set up first auto recycling plant in Gujarat , India’s west coast.
