As per SteelMint’s analysis, iron ore movement across major producing states of the country was recorded at 58.8 MnT in H1 2016. The figure has been compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka e-auction data and import data as per customs. The figure indicated does not include the captive iron ore movement of SAIL & Tata Steel, movement from Goa and movement for exports.
State-wise iron ore movement analysis:
Odisha dispatched 30.2 MnT iron ore from Jan’16-Jun’16 – Nearly 12 MnT iron ore was bought by Odisha based units. C.G. based units procured 7 MnT and West Bengal based units purchased 6 MnT iron ore in H1 2016.
Major buyers were Jindal Steel & Power (4.2 MnT), Bhushan Steel (2.5 MnT) Bhushan Power & Steel (2.1 MnT), Essar Steel (1.3 MnT) and BRPL (1.1 MnT). JSW Steel, Dolvi sourced nearly 1 MnT iron ore from Odisha.
Karnataka iron ore sales via e-auctions at 15.4 MnT – In H1 2016, 15.4 MnT iron ore was allotted via Karnataka e-auctions. Out of which 14 MnT iron ore was procured by within state based units. Prominent buyers were as follows: JSW Steel (9.8 MnT), BMM Ispat (0.7 MnT), RBSSN (0.5 MnT), MSPL (0.4 MnT) and Minera Steel & Power (0.3 MnT).
Iron ore movement from Chhattisgarh recorded at 7.7 MnT in H1 2016 – Vizag Steel sourced 2.8 MnT iron ore from NMDC’s Bailadila mines. While Essar Steel procured about 2.6 MnT iron ore via slurry pipeline from NMDC (C.G.), JSW Steel (Dolvi) procured 0.4 MnT iron ore via rake movement.
Out of 7.7 MnT iron ore dispatched from Chhattisgarh, C.G. based sponge units sourced 1.5 MnT while major quantity of about 5.4 MnT was taken by Andhra Pradesh based plants.
2.2 MnT iron ore was supplied from Jharkhand – Out of 2.2 MnT iron ore sold by Jharkhand based merchant iron ore miners, nearly 1 MnT was procured by state based units and rest was used by plants located in Odisha, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.
Iron ore import recorded at 3.2 MnT in Jan-Jun’16 – Iron ore and pellet imports to India were recorded at 3.4 MnT in H1 2016. Out of which iron ore imports stood at 3.2 MnT. Amongst the major iron ore importers were JSW Steel (1.5 MnT) and Essar Steel (0.6 MnT). Other vessels for iron ore import to India were bought by Gujarat based importers and southern India based importers.
Indian iron ore export at 9.1 MnT – In H1 CY16, Indian iron ore export stood at 9.1 MnT. Out of which share of export from Goa was 6 MnT and that of NMDC was 1.5 MnT. Pellet export from India in the same period was recorded at 1.1 MnT. Major pellet exporters were JSPL (0.5 MnT) and BRPL (0.3 MnT).
