Concerned over low domestic coal off-take, the Union Coal Secretary, Anil Swarup, had urged the state-owned power firms in a recent conference to stop importing and instead procure coal from Coal India Limited (CIL).
Asserting that CIL has enough coal to meet the domestic demand, he urged the power companies to work upon a plan to totally eliminate coal imports for generating power.
CIL has set up a transparent mechanism through auctions for ensuring availability of coal to consumers. The state-run miner has put 8 MnT of coal every month on the offer to the public as well as private power firms.
The Coal Secretary also said that embarking upon the ambitious target of producing one billion tonne of coal by 2020 will bear less meaning if there are no enough takers.
