India’s coal import rose by 7.3% M-o-M in Mar’16. The country’s yearly coal import also recorded a significant fall of 14.5% Y-o-Y.
India has registered a marginal growth in monthly coal import to 17.6 MnT in Mar’16. Besides, the country’s total yearly coal import fell by 5.6% to 219 MnT in FY16 compared to 232 MnT in FY15. The country’s demand for imported coal has fallen over the last one year owing to rise in domestic supply by the government in FY16.
India, the world’s 3rd largest coal importer, has reported a growth of 7.3% in Mar’16. The country imported total (Pet coke included) about 18.5 MnT coal during the month, which was 17.4 MnT in Feb’16.

Quantity in MnT
As per SteelMint’s data analysis, out of the total import, the country imported 14 MnT non-coking coal (up by 11%), 3.5 MnT coking coal and about 0.2 MnT coke & anthracite in Mar’16. About 0.96 MnT was Pet coke; majorly supplied by USA and Saudi Arabia.
However, India has been showing a marginal growth in March coal imports as strong trade activities witnessed during the end of the fiscal.
Major exporting countries to India in Mar’16
India purchases most of its coal from major supplier countries such as Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, Mozambique, USA, Russia and Saudi Arabia. These nations had supplied about 8.9 MnT, 3.7 MnT, 3.4 MnT, 0.4 MnT, 0.4 MnT, 0.4 MnT and 0.3 MnT respectively to India.

Indonesia remains to be the top exporter of non-coking and supplied about 8.9 MnT; registered a growth of 18% against Feb’16.
Major discharging ports and importers in Mar’16
India’s major ports handled about 70% coal of total monthly imports. Among the major Indian ports, Mundra imported maximum quantity of about 1.9 MnT, followed by Krishnapatnam (1.7 MnT) and Paradip (1.4 MnT).

Quantity in MnT
Companies like Adani Enterprises, Adani Power, JSW Steel, SAIL, Tata Steel, Agarwal Coal, Swiss Singapore, Essar Steel, RINL and UPCL imported large quantities of about 2.2 MnT, 1.6 MnT, 1.3 MnT, 0.9 MnT, 0.5 MnT, 0.4 MnT, 0.4 MnT, 0.3 MnT and 0.3 MnT respectively in Mar’16.
