India’s monthly coal import rose again by 14.5% in Dec’15, witnessing highest monthly import since May’15.
India, the world’s 3rd largest coal importer, has reported a rapid rise again in coal imports during Dec’15. It is the sharpest rise and the 2nd highest quantity imported by the country in FY16. The nation imported about 19.6 MnT at the month end, which is 10.5% Y-o-Y lower than import in Dec’14.

However in context to quarterly comparison, India’s coal import witnessed a fall of 12.3% to 54.7 MnT in Q3 FY16 compared to 62.4 MnT in Q3 FY15. Also imported about 165 MnT of coal during Apr-Dec in FY16.

Rise in domestic supply by CIL, sluggish demand and constant devaluation in INR have led to downfall in import during the fiscal.
Major discharging ports and importers in Dec’15
About 70% of coal was imported at key ports of the country. Among the major Indian ports, Mundra imported maximum quantity of about 2.8 MnT, followed by Krishnapatnam (1.6 MnT) and Gangavaram (1.5 MnT).
Companies like Adani Enterprises, Adani Power, JSW Steel, Coastal Gujarat Power, Essar Steel, SAIL, JSW Energy and Agarwal Coal imported large quantities of about 2.6 MnT, 1.8 MnT, 1.1 MnT, 1 MnT, 0.81 MnT, 0.76 MnT, 0.75 MnT and 0.66 MnT respectively in Dec’15.
