Odisha government is examining
the proposal of the Aditya Birla group controlled Essel Mining to set up a 1.2 million tones per annum iron ore
pelletisation plant at Koira in the district of Sundargrh.
The project has become very
important for the mining major, as it is trying to comply itself with the new
rules of the state government, which restricts mining for captive purposes
only.
Recently under secretary at the
Steel and mines department Mr. B.Behera forwarded a letter to the Chief General
Manager, IPICOL to examine the proposal, whether that comply with the state
government guideline of setting up steel and related plants in the state.
The August 2011 guidelines says
that all proposals for setting up steel plants, sponge iron plants or mineral
value addition plants suitable technology mix should be adopted using state of
the art energy efficient technology and
pollution control measures.
Essel mining is one of the top commercial miners in
the state which has mines in both Koira and Joda mining circles. In Joda
company has operations in Kasia iron ore and ling-Lanolatta iron ore and
manganese mines. Recently the state government has served penalty notice to the
company for mining without lawful authority and beyond the permitted limit. As
per the government assessment the company has raised minerals (iron ore)
costing 4368 crore 75 lakh rupees without lawful authority.
