Maintaining its leading position in the East Coast, Paradip Port has handled 24.34 MnT of cargo in the April-July period against 22.9 MnT in the corresponding period last year. Port authorities have attributed the growth in traffic to commodities like coking, non-coking coal and others.
Paradip Port is followed by Vishakhapattnam Port which handled 18 MnT, while the Chennai Port handled 17.81 MnT of cargo.
The total coal handling at Paradip Port in the first 4 months stands at 13.20 MnT as against 8.86 MnT handled during the corresponding period of previous year with an increased growth rate of 15.59%. During the period, Paradip Port handled 529 ships as against 471 ships handled during the corresponding period of previous year. Incidentally, among the major ports of India, Paradip Port stands out as the largest coal handling port in terms of volume with 13.20 MnT followed by Ennore Port with 8.69 MnT in the first four months of FY16.
Incidentally, the mechanized coal plant of Paradip Port in the month of May’15, for the first time in its one and a half decade ofbeing in operation, handled 2.01 MnT of cargo. It is the highest volume of thermal coal handled by the port in a single month, surpassing the previous best of 1.99 MnT handled in the month of Nov’14.
