CIL has set a target of 38.56 MnT coal production for underground mining for FY16, may reopen 6 closed underground mines to execute the plan.
In an endeavor to ramp up domestic coal market, Coal India, world’s largest coal producer, is planning to open up six closed underground mines to enhance contribution of underground mining in its FY16 coal production target.
In FY15, coal production from underground mining was about 35.1 MnT, which was about 7% of total production. Coal production from underground mining in FY15 registered a decline of about 3% against FY14.

Coal India is presently screening all the necessary requirements to overcome the lacuna in underground mining system. The above move will definitely help CIL to achieve its coal production target.
It should be noted that last year a target of 505 MnT of Coal production was set for CIL. But it produced about 494 MnT, missing its Coal production target by about 3%. This year CIL has been allocated a production target of 550 MnT.
