India’s coal production increased by nearly 7 million tons (mnt), or 9% y-o- y, to 86.6 mnt in February 2023. However, y-o-y growth was lower than in the previous three months. The yearly growth rates in November and December last year as well as January 2023 were all in double digits.
India’s daily coal production increased to 3.1 mnt in February from 2.9 mnt in January 2023.
Company-wise performance
The captive miners’ performance was the highlight in February. Coal production by the captive miners increased by almost 28% y-o-y during the month.
Production by Coal India Ltd. (CIL) stood at 68.8 mnt, a growth of 7% y-o-y in February.
- For the second consecutive month, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (SECL) posted the highest production among CIL subsidiaries with a growth of 21% y-o-y. SECL’s coal production stood at 18.4 mnt.
- Production by Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. (MCL) stood at 17.25 mnt, up 7% y-o-y.
- Western Coalfields Ltd’s (WCL’s) coal production increased by 17% y-o-y to nearly 8 mnt in February.
- All the other subsidiaries logged a decline in production compared with last year.
Production by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) remained unchanged y-o-y in February at 6 mnt.
India surpasses FY22 coal production
India’s coal production till February in FY23 has surpassed FY22’s production of 777 mnt. During the April 2022-February 2023 period the country’s coal production stood at 784.4 mnt, up 15% y-o-y.
During the same period, CIL produced 619.7 mnt, up 14.3% y-o-y. Among CIL subsidiaries, Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. (BCCL), SECL and MCL outpaced FY 22 production numbers in February.
Coal output of the captive blocks also surpassed FY22 production of 89.6 mnt, an increase of 30% y-o-y to 104.6 mnt during the April-February period. Meanwhile, SCCL’s production remained at a similar level compared to last year.
