India’s Coal Import down by 5% M-o-M in April 2015

India’s monthly Coal imports stood at 19.5 MnT in Apr’15 with a marginal decline of 5% compared to previous month.

India, a significant player in global Coal imports, has imported about 19.5 MnT of Coal in Apr’15. Although, the month registered a marginal decline of 5% against Mar’15 import which was 20.6 MnT, but total import jumped Y-o-Y from 17.9 MnT in Apr’14.

As per SteelMint’s data analysis, out of the total Coal imports, the country imported around 15.7 MnT of Non-coking coal in Apr’15 which is a decline of 4% against 16.4 MnT Non-coking coal imported in Mar’15, about 3.3 MnT Coking and 0.4 MnT Coke & Anthracite was imported by the country by the end of the month.

Apart from that, the country imported about 0.85 MnT of Pet Coke which has shown a considerable growth compared to its last month imports noted at 0.42 MnT. The total quantity was majorly supplied by USA & Saudi Arabia.

Top Exporting Countries

Indonesia, Australia, South Africa and USA were the major suppliers of Coal at month end. Indonesia remains to be the top exporter of Non-coking coal and supplied about 12.2 MnT; arise by 2% against Mar’15. Australia and South Africa supplied about 3.4 MnT and 2.3 MnT Coal respectively. In April, India imported about 0.32 MnT of Met coke from China.

Major Discharging Ports
Shipments were through 31 Coal handling ports of India. Mundra, one of the largest port, imported maximum quantity of about 3 MnT, followed by Paradip & Hazira ports, which imported of 1.4 MnT & 1.3 MnT Coal respectively.

Country’s Major Importers
SteelMint assessed that Adani Enterprises, Adani Power, SAIL and TANGEDCO major importers of Coal; importing around 2.0 MnT, 2.0 MnT, 1 MnT & 0.9 MnT respectively.
Indian Steel giants, Essar & JSW Steel, imported around 0.86 MnT & 0.85 MnT Coal respectively at the end of the month. Import of SAIL declined marginally against last month.

Albeit, Coal import is expected to increase in coming months due to ongoing restocking by Indian buyers before monsoon.
