Thermal coal production at Australia’s Whitehaven mine is expected to continue till around 2059 amid two upcoming exploration licenses enhancing mine life by 15 years. The mine had received approval for operation till 2044 in April 2022. The mine expansion plan would boost production from 5.4 mnt/year to 8 mnt/year. However, sources mentioned that exploration licences do not guarantee mining activities to take place.
