Japanese steelmaker, JFE steel, is likely to commence sales of low-carbon steel based on the ‘Mass Balance’ method from 2023, post the completion of third-party certification. Moreover, the company is expecting annual sales volume of around 5 million tonnes (mnt) by 2030.
The Japan Steel Association (JSA) has established guidelines for low-carbon steel products to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the operating process to a portion of steel sales.
Moreover, Kobe Steel has started sales of low-carbon steel products this year, while Nippon Steel will do the same from next year.
Low-carbon steel products have the same quality compared with conventional steel, while they are expensive to manufacture. It is important to gain customers’ understanding of added value and pass on the burden of facility investment or cost surge to the selling price. The recovery of domestic demand for Japanese steel products will continue,” said Yoshihisa Kitano (President JFE steel)
