With manufacturing activity picking up pace and power demand increasing ahead of the festive season, a total of 4.2 million tonnes (mnt) of imported coal is set to arrive at Indian ports from 29 September-23 October, 2022, data compiled by CoalMint shows.
Manufacturing units that were closed have begun resuming operations and are pinning hopes on strong pent-up demand during the festive season.
Out of the total quantity, thermal coal volumes are seen at the highest at 63%, as shipments from Indonesia, Australia, and Russia occupy the three top spots.
Coking coal volumes are at 33% of the total quantity arriving, with shipments originating from Australia, and the US being the highest.
The volumes for pet coke and met coke, however, remained lower at 60,000 t and 42,492 t respectively for JK Laxmi Cement, IMR Resources, and TSML.
Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) is set to bring a total of 48,054 t of PCI coal in the upcoming week for its usage in blast furnace.
Thermal coal

As per CoalMint’s vessel line-up data, thermal coal shipments from Indonesia are set to take the highest share as the government directed power plants to ensure optimum power availability during the festive season.
Adani Enterprise is set to bring in the highest stock of both Indonesian and Australian coal at 0.3 mnt each in the upcoming week.
Agarwal Coal, on the other hand, is seen getting 0.11 mnt of Indonesian supplies and 75,000 t of Australian coal.
JSW International, Bhushan Power, and SM Niryat are the only importers of South African coal vessels in the coming week to the tune of 0.13 mnt.
Meanwhile, AM/NS India, Rawmet Commodity, and Swiss Singapore would bring in the Russian coal to the tune of 0.47 mnt.
Coking coal

Australian coking coal supplies continued to remain high as a total of 0.74 mnt is set to arrive at the Indian ports till 23 October 2022. JSW Steel and Tata Steel are the biggest buyers of this material at 0.21 mnt and 0.36 mnt, respectively.
SAIL, on the other hand, is set to get 0.31 mnt of US coal and 3,000 t of Indonesian coking coal in the coming weeks.
In terms of Russian supplies, JSW Steel is also set to bring in 0.18 mnt, whereas Jindal Stainless would bring in 15,000 t.
Short-term outlook
With rising winter restocking activity across the globe, any major rise in thermal coal vessel arrivals in India may get capped as global coal prices continue to remain on the higher side.
