Botswana: Govt commissions new coal mine to boost capacity amid strong demand

Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has commissioned a new 1.4-mnt/year coal mine at state-owned Morupule Coal Mine (MCM). MCM currently produces 2.8 mnt of coal/year from its underground operations and is set to boost production to 4.2 mnt this year and to 7.6 mnt by 2027. The government aims to increase its seaborne coal exports through Maputo and Walvis Bay this year.
