India: Bulk Ship Breaking Prices up by USD 5-10/MT in Alang

Ship breaking prices in Alang (Gujarat), Asia’s largest ship recycling yard, noticed an uptick of USD 5/MT this week. Current offers for Box ship are assessed at USD 435/MT and for Dry ship at USD 410/MT; up by USD 10/MT and USD 5/MT respectively.

No specific reason sought for rise in prices but market participants mentioned that falling supply in domestic market, improved domestic production and reasonable stable prices in global market have supported bulk ship breaking prices. Overall buying sentiments remain weak and limited scope of rise in prices.

Ship Plates and melting Scrap prices in Alang have recovered by INR 500-600/MT W-o-W as prices fall sharply last week. Domestic HMS prices also down marginally by INR 300/MT in Mumbai and INR 100/MT in Mandi Gobindgarh.

Alang is the largest ship recycling yard in Asia, which handled about 305 ships in 2013 and about 285 ships in 2014 (till Jan’14-Dec’14). Alang is also a major source for Scrap generation in India and generates 4 MnT Scrap every year, as per SteelMint analysis.
