The iron and steel industry is one of the hard-to-abate sectors when it comes to direct reduction of carbon emissions. Experts are of the view that the means of reducing CO2 emissions from industrial processes have to be adopted at the earliest. Global average emissions last year was around 1.9 tonnes (t) of carbon dioxide (CO2) per tonne of crude steel (tcs). But emissions from the primary steelmaking route (BF-BOF) were around 2.3 tCO2/tcs.
