NTPC coal imports surge nine-folds y-o-y in Q1FY23

NTPC coal imports stood at 4.33 mnt, up 821% y-o-y and 304% q-o-q in Q1FY23. The humongous increase in imports was because of the Indian government’s encouragement to import coal amid shortage. However, domestic coal supply to NTPC in Q1 was at 51 mnt, unchanged q-o-q but rising by 12% y-o-y. Meanwhile, the average traffic was INR 4.6 per unit in this period, up 22.5% y-o-y.
