India: Brick kilns in Punjab on brink of closure due to high imported coal prices

Due to soaring coal prices and rising GST rates, the Bhatinda Brick Kiln Manufacturers Association, Punjab, has decided to suspend operations indefinitely. Bhatinda has 160 brick factories, 60 of which had to be closed due to high input costs. The Punjab Brick Kiln Association, with 2,700 kilns, took the same decision in the beginning of Jun’22. Imported coal prices have almost doubled in the past year.
