South Africa’s largest rail network, Transnet, plans to ferry 60 mnt of coal to the Richard’s Bay terminal (RBCT) in 2022, a projected rise of 3% as against 2021 but down 22% from 2017. Uptil 25 Apr’22, the national carrier had transported 18.5 mnt of coal this year. Market sources believe the target is well-nigh impossible due to shortage of spare parts for rail lines, with 49 mnt of shipments being a realistic target.
