China: Coal imports rise more than 40%, m-o-m, in April

With increasing coal consumption during the summer season, China’s coal imports rose sharply by 43% m-o-m to 23.54 mnt in Apr’22, customs data shows. The rise in imports was due to power utilities focussing on building stockpiles. Despite record coal output in Jan-Mar’22, state planner NDRC has recently withdrawn import tariff on all types of coal till Mar’23 to boost supplies.
