South Korea: POSCO starts refractory brick construction at Gwangyang BF

Steel giant POSCO recently marked the start of the refractory brick construction along with a ceremony to seek successful operation of the blast furnace.

The event was held at POSCO’s second repair site for blast furnace 4 at its Gwangyang works.

The no. 4 blast furnace (BF) with an internal volume of 5,500 m3 is a super-large BF in POSCO’s fleet. The BF was fired in 1992 and underwent its first renovation in 2009. It has churned out 57.4 million tonnes (mnt) of molten iron since 2009, and has played a vital role since the last 13 years.

The time for repair and construction of the new cooling facilities is estimated at about 120 days. After which the BF shall commence its full-fledged operation starting with a fire ceremony to light the blast furnace on 11 June.

“The blast furnace is a symbol of steelworks and can be said to be a support. The competitiveness of a steel mill lies in the efficiency of a blast furnace,” said POSCO CEO, Kim Hak-dong, in a statement.
