The Supreme Court’s decision on Coal blocks de-allocation is on hold. The next hearing has scheduled on 9 Sep, 2014.
In last hearing on 25 Aug, 2014, the SC declared that all Coal blocks (almost 200), which were allotted since 1993 are illegal and adjourned the hearing for today.
The Attorney General and Central government had requested the SC to save 46 allocated Coal blocks, which are currently in operation. They also suggested to de-allocate blocks, which are non-operational.
Union government is prepared for the prospect of the SC’s decision to cancel all inappropriate Coal block allocated since 1993, which were declared illegal last week. Also, Central government has urged that they are ready to start Coal blocks auction process after cancellation.
India, which relies on Coal to generate over 65% of electricity, is currently combating with Coal shortage. In this situation, the SC’s judgment for cancellation of Coal blocks is doubtful, as this may shatter power sector, which is already reeling under pressure.
