Rake shortage and surging imported coal prices have impacted the coal stocks at Indian power plants. CEA data shows that as on 14 Mar’22, coal stocks at 173 power plants stood at 26.5 mnt, sufficient for 9.5 days and at 39% of the normative level mandated by recently formulated norms. As many as 81 projects have critical stocks, including 61 plants dependent on domestic coal, 10 on imported coal and nine non-operational plants.
