South Korea: Hot-dipped galvanised steel exports up 6% y-o-y in Jan’22

South Korea’s hot-dipped galvanised steel exports stood at 143,401 tonnes (t) in Jan’22, an increase of 6% against 135,113 t in the corresponding period last year. Similarly, on a monthly basis, the same rose by 8% against 133,284 t exported in Dec’21.

Region-wise exports

Exports to the Middle East rose 88% y-o-y to 6,476 t, Europe at 51,760 t (up 58%), South America at 4,321 t (up 314%), Africa at 4,072 t (up 464%) and Oceania at 1,812 t (up 516%).

GI imports down y-o-y

South Korea’s hot-dipped galvanised steel (GI) imports stood at 36,028 t in Jan’22, down significantly by 36% against 56,285 t in Jan’21. Meanwhile, on a monthly basis, import volumes rose 8% against 33,221 t in Dec’21.

Imports from China accounted for almost 90% of South Korea’s total GI imports in Jan’22 but the volumes fell by 32% y-o-y to 32,362 t. Imports from Japan stood at 3,600 t (down 57% y-o-y).
