India’s largest iron ore miner, NMDC, produced 3.95 million tonnes (mn t) of the steel-making raw material in Dec’21, up by 18% m-o-m, compared to 3.34 mn t in Nov’21, SteelMint learnt from the company’s recent BSE filing. Moreover, the company’s iron ore production hit a nine-month high in Dec’21.
Out of the total volume produced in Dec’21, a major chunk was recorded from Chhattisgarh mines at 2.92 mn t, while the remaining 1.03 mn t was extracted from the company’s Karnataka mines. The miner’s production from Chhattisgarh and Karnataka rose by 14% and 32%, m-o-m, respectively.
Notably, in CY’21, NMDC achieved the best ever monthly iron ore production since its inception in Apr, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sept, Oct and Nov.
NMDC has recorded the highest cumulative iron ore output of 28.32 mn t in FY’22 (Apr-Dec’21), achieving a growth of 30%, as against 21.83 mn t in the corresponding period last year (CPLY).
The country’s top miner has set production guidance of 44 mn t in FY’22. The PSU miner expects to scale up production to 70 mn t by 2025.

Iron ore sales rise in Dec’21
NMDC reported an 18% increase in its total iron ore sales in Dec’21 to 3.40 mn t as against 2.88 mn t in November. Total sales from the Chhattisgarh mines stood at 2.58 mn t and the remaining 0.82 mn t were from its Karnataka mines.
The miner has registered a best-ever sales performance during Apr-Dec’21 period. The cumulative iron ore sales stood at 28.36 mn t in this period, a y-o-y rise of 27%, as compared to 22.27 mn t in the same period last year.
