South African RB1 (6000 NAR) coal prices declined to $135/t on 29 Nov’21, down $15/t in a single day, and $23/t w-o-w, amidst rising uncertainty over the spread of the new Covid variant, Omicron. China’s state planner NDRC has announced a new price mechanism to keep domestic coal prices in check. Rising Covid cases in Europe has also slowed down demand for South African coal.
