South African thermal coal import prices inch up on active enquiries from India- sources

As domestic coal shortage persists, the Indian government has asked power plants to import coal. With supply from Indonesia constrained due to torrential rains in that country, buyers in India have had to turn to South Africa for supply. The RB1 (6000 NAR) grade coal price today is up $6/t to $150/t. Moreover, domestic coal prices in India have moved up substantially as evidenced at recent auctions. The difference between domestic and imported coal has shrunk to INR 1,000/t compared to INR 2,500-3,000/t a month ago.
