In 2018, Chinese needle coke (key raw material for Graphite electrodes) capacity stood at 550,000 tonne with output being recorded at 370,000 tonne. However, in 2021, the capacity had been increased to about 1.97mn t, with output estimated to stand at 1.09 mn t, as per market reports. This surge can be mainly attributed to increase in GE demand in China amid rise in steel output via EAF route as a measure of curb carbon emissions and also rise in demand from lithium-ion battery segment used in electric vehicles there.
